    Agentic AI dominated RSAC 2026, but the conversation focused almost entirely on internal risk, leaving the external implications for brand protection unaddressed.

    When Cisco’s president Jeetu Patel took the main stage at RSAC 2026, he put it simply: “With chatbots, you worry about getting the wrong answer. With agents, you worry about taking the wrong action.” AI agents aren’t hypothetical. They’re operating in production environments, making autonomous decisions, interacting with external services, and doing so at a scale and speed that existing security frameworks weren’t designed to govern. Many of them are shadow AI: unapproved agents running outside security visibility, creating exfiltration paths and external attack surfaces that organizations don’t know exist.

    The conference’s dominant theme wasn’t a surprise to anyone tracking the space, but the urgency was. According to Omdia, 89% of CISOs are now pushing to accelerate agentic security adoption. Microsoft announced shadow AI detection capabilities at the network layer, specifically designed to surface AI applications operating outside IT visibility. And Google’s Sandra Joyce shared Mandiant’s M-Trends 2026 finding that the time between initial access and attacker handoff has collapsed from eight hours in 2022 to 22 seconds in 2025. The implication: when attacks move at machine speed, defenses operating on human timescales become structural liabilities.

    What the conference didn’t address is what this means for brand protection. The same dynamics creating shadow agent risks inside the enterprise are creating new attack surfaces outside it, surfaces that map directly to brand impersonation, credential harvesting, and fraud.

    From shadow IT to shadow agents

    Shadow AI follows the same pattern as shadow IT, but with higher stakes. Employees adopt consumer AI tools, connect them to work data, and use them to automate tasks without IT approval or security review. Microsoft’s Edge team described the core risk at RSAC: when employees type or upload sensitive information into consumer AI tools, that data can be retained or used to train models, creating downstream exposure that’s difficult to trace and nearly impossible to recall.

    But shadow AI in 2026 goes beyond employees pasting data into ChatGPT. The new concern is autonomous agents: AI systems that take actions, interact with APIs, browse the web, send messages, and make decisions without constant human oversight. Approximately 60% of organizations have transitioned to AI-augmented automation, up from less than 20% in 2023. Many of those agents operate outside security visibility entirely.

The consensus is clear: organizations don’t know how many AI agents are running in their environments, what those agents can access, or what actions they’re taking autonomously.

    Why brand protection teams should care

    The conversation at RSAC stayed focused on internal risks: shadow agents exfiltrating data, making unauthorized decisions, or creating compliance gaps. That’s an important set of problems. But the external implications are where brand protection intersects with agentic AI, and they’re compounding.

    AI agents as phishing targets. When agents interact with external services autonomously, they become targets for the same brand impersonation infrastructure that targets humans. Agentic commerce fraud has already demonstrated that AI shopping agents can be redirected to fake storefronts that satisfy programmatic criteria while harvesting credentials. As agents expand beyond commerce into customer service, procurement, and partner communication, each new interaction surface becomes a potential impersonation target.

    Agents as unwitting brand impersonators. An unapproved AI agent sending emails, posting content, or interacting with customers on a company’s behalf creates an impersonation vector the company itself doesn’t control. When that agent makes errors, hallucinates, or operates on stale data, the brand absorbs the reputational damage. When an attacker compromises the agent, they inherit the brand’s authority.

    Non-human identities as attack surface. RSAC sessions emphasized that non-human identities, including service accounts, bots, and AI agents, now outnumber human identities by a significant margin. These identities are often decentralized, lack clear human ownership, and possess excessive permissions that are rarely audited. For attackers, compromising a non-human identity that interacts with customers or partners is functionally equivalent to impersonating the brand, except the access is pre-authenticated and the trust is already established.

    Speed as a structural problem. Mandiant’s 22-second handoff figure reframes the detection gap for brand protection. If attackers can move from initial access to monetization in seconds, and if AI agents can be redirected to fraudulent infrastructure at machine speed, then detection and response capabilities that operate on human timescales become irrelevant. The nine-hour gap that already challenged legacy security tools compresses further when neither the attacker nor the target requires human involvement.

    The model context protocol problem

    One of the more consequential technical developments discussed at RSAC was the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which governs how AI systems interact with data and applications. MCP enables agents to become context-aware, pulling information from multiple sources to inform autonomous decisions. The security implications are significant: MCP expands the attack surface by creating standardized interfaces that, if not secured at the identity layer, allow adversaries to inject context, redirect actions, or harvest credentials through the agent’s trusted connections.

    For brand protection, MCP represents a new category of trusted-platform abuse. Just as Living Off Trusted Sites attacks exploit the reputation of legitimate hosting platforms, MCP-based attacks could exploit the trusted connections between agents and the services they’re authorized to access. The infrastructure is legitimate. The intent, once again, is not.

    The “vibe coding” phenomenon compounds the risk. RSAC sessions highlighted that developers collaborating with AI assistants are generating code without fully understanding the security implications. When that code governs agent behavior, each unreviewed function becomes a potential vulnerability in the agent’s interaction with external services, including the services that define a brand’s digital presence.

    What this means for external threat monitoring

    The RSAC conversation about agentic AI focused almost entirely on internal security posture: how to inventory agents, govern permissions, detect shadow deployments, and limit blast radius. Those are necessary capabilities. But they address only half the problem.

    External threat monitoring must now account for a world in which AI agents interact with an organization’s digital presence at scale. That means monitoring for impersonation infrastructure designed to deceive algorithms, not just humans. It means detecting when agents are being redirected to lookalike domains or fraudulent endpoints. And it means understanding that the takedown timeline that was already too slow for human victims becomes meaningless when agents operate at machine speed.

    The vendors building agent governance tools are solving the internal problem. The external problem, protecting the brand from being impersonated to agents and protecting the brand from unauthorized agents acting in its name, remains largely unaddressed by the solutions announced at RSAC. That gap won’t stay open long. The organizations that close it first will be the ones that recognized the external threat surface before it became a headline.
